Fund A Need
“All children need a laptop. Not a computer, but a human laptop. Moms, dads, grannies and grandpas, aunts, uncles – someone to hold them, read to them, teach them. Loved ones who will embrace them and pass on experience, rituals and knowledge of a hundred previous generations. Loved ones who will pass to the next generation their expectations of them, their hopes, and their dreams.”
General Colin L. Powell,
Founder of America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth
Unfortunately, we can’t provide all children with a laptop … but we CAN help provide them an environment where they are nurtured, cared for, allowed to dream, and given hope. Gala attendees helped provide for the needs of the children at Casa Guatemala through the Fund-A-Need portion of the Live Auction such as:
- Meals for a child for a month $40
- Fuel for transportation $100
- A teacher for a month $250
- Meals for a child for a year $500
- A washer or dryer $750
- Sponsor a teenager for a year $1,500
CAJON DE ESPERANZA (WORLD OF HOPE) CHEST...
According to legend, Guatemalan children tell their worries to “Worry Dolls.” Every night before bed, they will tell their worries to the dolls and place them under their pillows. In the morning, the dolls have taken their worries away.
Worry dolls were sold during the Gala that provided Gala guests the chance to open the Cajón de Esperanza (World of Hope) Chest filed with an assortment of fabulous prizes. The children’s chest was also auctioned off at the Gala!
EL MERCADO DE ESPERANZA (THE MARKET OF HOPE)…
CHILDVISION WORLD OF HOPE GREETING CARDS...
In the highland towns of Guatemala, local markets are the main economic focus. They also serve as a social and cultural event second only to the local fiesta day or holiday. Market Day draws people from all over the neighboring region. It is a social event where you see distant neighbors and take the time to visit and catch up on the latest news and gossip.
Another unique way funds are being raised for Childvision is through the El Mercado de Esperanza (Market of Hope), where you can get to know the children from Casa Guatemala, and find an opportunity to support some of their everyday needs. At the marketplace, the following were available:
-
Authentic Guatemalan Gifts: The marketplace sold beautiful masks and textiles from Guatemala.
-
Wristbands for Busy Hands: Wristbands were sold at $5 for 2 bands which provided sports equipment or playground games for the children at Casa Guatemala.
- Greeting Cards for Good Health: A set of 12 greeting cards — each designed by a child of an FTIA family — for $10 were sold to provide needed medications and vitamins for the children. We have two types of sets available: one for the holidays and one for year-round. Click here to purchase your Childvision World of Hope Greeting Cards online!!
- Lanyards for Learning: Lanyards were sold for $15 to provide desperately needed school supplies for the children.
- Gift of Hope Gift Bag: Starbuck’s gift bags containing two mugs, two gel pens and two aromatic bags of Starbucks coffee were sold for $35 and support a child at Casa Guatemala for a month.
As with all Childvision fundraising efforts, 100% of funds raised through card sales will directly benefit older children around the world who will never be adopted.
